In this course, we will study issues of poverty, ill-health, disability, unemployment, old age. In these areas, the federal and state governments of most countries intervene to ameliorate the plights of individuals and families. We will consider causes and effects of the conditions causing economic insecurity, as well as study the kinds of government and business programs designed to intervene in those causes and effects. Ethics concepts are applied to help students decide for themselves what personal, business, and governmental policies ought to be.

In the spirit of the focus of the College of Business Administration for this academic year, a "Community of Learning, Discovery, and Service", we will endeavor to enhance the development of community amongst class members through respectful and challenging discussion in class and in discussion forums on the class website, to encourage discovery through openness to project/presentation ideas, and to recognize service in the grading structure of the course (see Extra Credit).
Students will gain skills in discussion participation, discussion leadership, multi-media design and presentation, written composition, oral interviewing techniques, concept mapping, internet research, quantitative analysis, and teamwork.
