  3. the file turned in by the student was corrupt and/or could not be loaded to the class web site; the student did not turn in a digital file as required;
  4. the file was too large to carry on our college server;

Netscape Communicator Instructions

Web-based WORD document live link
The student's file will open in your default browser.  You can specify a new window by right clicking the web page live link.
Live links to glossary definitions and footnotes work, and the browser's back arrow or button will take you back to the spot in the text from which you came.
Microsoft WORD document link:
When you click on the file,
Live links will work and the back arrow will take you back to the spot in the text from which you came.
Web-based PowerPoint presentation live link: [NOT the recommended way to open Microsoft PowerPoint presentations in Netscape]
If you open a web-based Microsoft PowerPoint presentation in your browser, the presentation will open in a divided screen, with the slide outline to the left, the slide to the top right, and the notes to accompany the slide to the bottom right.  The navigation arrow to get from slide to slide is in the task bar at the bottom of the browser window.
The disadvantage to this method is that Netscape does not allow you to change the size of the frames so that you can't easily see the notes that explain the slides.
Microsoft PowerPoint presentation link: [PREFERRED WAY TO OPEN MICROSOFT POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS in Netscape Communicator]
When you click on the link, a dialog box will ask if you want to open the file or save it, and if you choose open, will open the file in Microsoft PowerPoint as a full-featured file, allowing you to see the notes that explain the slides, by choosing the notes page view.

Microsoft Internet Explorer Instructions

Web-based WORD document live link: [NOT the recommended way to open WORD documents in Microsoft Internet Explorer]
The student's file will open in your default browser, sometimes with very odd results (like, for example, showing all the editing symbols).  You can specify a new window by right clicking the web page live link.
Live links to glossary definitions and footnotes work, BUT the browser's back arrow or button will take you back to the class website, rather than to the spot in the text from which you came.
Microsoft WORD document link: [PREFERRED WAY TO OPEN MICROSOFT WORD FILES in Microsoft Internet Explorer]
To open the student's file in Microsoft WORD, RIGHT-CLICK on the link and choose "Save Target As: ", then save the file and open it from Microsoft WORD.
The live links will all work and the back arrow WILL work to let you navigate around the paper.
Web-based PowerPoint presentation live link: [PREFERRED WAY TO OPEN MICROSOFT POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS in Microsoft Internet Explorer]
The student's file will open in your default browser.  You can specify a new window by right clicking the web page live link.
Be sure to set the frame sizes so that you can read the notes that accompany each slide.
Live links to glossary definitions and footnotes work, and the browser's back arrow or button will take you back to the spot in the presentation from which you came.
Microsoft PowerPoint presentation link:
The student's file will open in your browser window, with only the slide itself visible.  You will not be able to see the notes to explain material in the slide.  To see the notes, you need to RIGHT-CLICK on the link and choose "Save Target As", then save the file and open it from Microsoft PowerPoint.  Then you can choose notes page view and see the notes that explain the slides.
